To grade the color of a diamond the stone is compared to other stones of known color under carefully controlled lighting and viewing conditions. Clarity refers to the absence of blemishes or inclusions in a diamond. Diamonds are formed in the earth under extreme heat and pressure and when diamonds are formed they will often have marks appear. An external mark is known as a blemish and any internal markings are known as inclusions. Clarity is measured on a scale with 11 grades and grading is done by someone with a skilled eye under 10x magnification. There are many different styles of cut, each one giving the diamond different visual characteristics. The way a
diamond is cut will affect attributes known as brilliance, fire and scintillation. Brilliance is the total amount
of light reflected from a diamond. Fire is the way light is dispersed into different colors of the color spectrum.
